Who Qualifies for PWD Benefits?

To be eligible for disability assistance in BC, you must :

  • Be 18 years or older (can apply at 17½)
  • Meet financial eligibility requirements for income assistance
  • Have a severe physical or mental impairment expected to last two years or more
  • Be significantly restricted in performing daily-living activities
  • Require help from another person, assistive device, or assistance animal for daily activities

Support Allowance Rates (Effective December 1, 2025)

The support allowance forms the base of your BC disability assistance payment. Different family compositions receive different rates based on the PWD designation status of family members .

Category A: Singles, couples, and two-parent families where one family member is a PWD and the other is not a PWD and is under 65 .

Category B: Couples and two-parent families where both adults are PWDs .

Category C: One-parent families where the parent is a PWD .

Category D: Couples and two-parent families where one adult is a PWD and the other adult is not a PWD and is 65 or more years of age .

Shelter Allowance (Effective December 1, 2025)

Shelter allowance helps with housing costs including rent, mortgage, utilities, and other shelter expenses. You receive the lesser of your actual shelter costs and the maximum for your family size, with a minimum guaranteed amount .

Important shelter rules:

  • If actual shelter costs are less than the minimum, you still receive the minimum allowance
  • Families with someone on Old Age Security (OAS) get maximum shelter for their family size
  • After 10 persons, minimum increases by $25 per additional person, maximum by $50 per additional person

Additional Benefits and Supplements

Transportation Supplement

$52 per month – Provided to persons with the PWD designation, either as cash or an in-kind bus pass .

Christmas Supplement

Automatically included in December payments to help with holiday expenses .

Child Benefits Top-Up Supplement

Families may receive a monthly payment for each child under 19 years of age. Contact the BC government for current rates .

Asset Limits and Earnings Exemptions

Asset limits for PWD: A single person applying for PWD can have up to $100,000 in assets . Trust funds can be set up for up to $200,000 for purposes like attendant care or medical equipment .

Earnings exemption: A single person can earn up to $16,200 per year in employment income without impacting their PWD cheque. After this amount, there is a dollar-for-dollar deduction .

Recent update (January 1, 2026): The Annual Earnings Exemption for disability assistance couples and two-parent families where only one person has PWD designation increased from $19,440 to $23,400 .

When You Receive Disability Assistance

Disability assistance is paid in the month following designation. In cases where designation occurs prior to the individual's 18th birthday, payments begin in the month of the 18th birthday .

Monthly reporting requirements: Disability assistance recipients only need to submit a monthly report when they have earned income or changes from the previous month to report .
