Canada Carbon Rebate Eligibility Checker

Complete guide to determining if you qualified for the federal carbon rebate (now closed)

Program Status: Closed

The Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) program is now closed. Following Prime Minister Mark Carney's announcement on March 14, 2025, the consumer carbon tax was cancelled effective April 1, 2025, and the rebate program ended . The final CCR payments were issued on April 22, 2025 .

This Canada Carbon Rebate Eligibility Checker serves as a reference guide for historical eligibility criteria and payment information.

The Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) was a tax-free benefit designed to help eligible individuals and families offset the cost of federal pollution pricing. Formerly known as the Climate Action Incentive Payment (CAIP), the program provided quarterly payments to residents in provinces where the federal carbon tax applied .

To be eligible for the CCR, you needed to meet specific criteria regarding residency, age, and family status at the beginning of each payment month .

Quick Eligibility Checklist for Carbon Rebate

Use this checklist to see if you would have qualified for the Canada Carbon Rebate:

You were a resident of Canada in the month before the payment
You were a resident of an eligible CCR province (Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan)
You were at least 19 years old, OR under 19 with a spouse/common-law partner or a child you lived with
You filed your income tax return for the applicable year

Eligible Provinces for CCR

The Canada Carbon Rebate was available in provinces where the federal carbon pricing system applied. Residents of the following provinces were eligible :

  • Alberta
  • Manitoba
  • New Brunswick
  • Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Nova Scotia
  • Ontario
  • Prince Edward Island
  • Saskatchewan

Not eligible provinces and territories: British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Quebec, and Yukon were not eligible for the federal CCR, as these jurisdictions had their own provincial or territorial carbon pricing programs .

Age Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the CCR, you needed to meet the age criteria at the beginning of the payment month :

  • 19 years or older: Automatically eligible if you met the residency and provincial requirements
  • Under 19 years old: Could still be eligible if you met at least one of the following conditions:
    • You have or had a spouse or common-law partner
    • You are or were a parent and live(d) with your child

Child Eligibility Criteria

If you had children, amounts for each eligible child were included in the CCR calculation. A child was eligible if all the following conditions were met at the beginning of the payment month :

  • The child was under 19 years of age
  • The child was your child or dependent on you or your spouse/common-law partner for support
  • The child had never had a spouse or common-law partner
  • The child had never been the parent of a child they lived with
  • The child was living with you

Child registration: If your child was already registered for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) or the GST/HST credit, an amount for each eligible child was automatically included in your CCR calculation .

Shared Custody Arrangements

If you and your ex-spouse shared custody of your child or children, each parent would receive 50% of the amount they would have received if the child resided with them full-time .

Spouse and Common-Law Partner Rules

Only one person per household receives the CCR payment for the family. The payment is issued to the person who files their tax return first . Key points :

  • Both spouses or common-law partners need to file their income tax returns even if there is no income to report
  • The payment amount is the same regardless of who receives it
  • An eligible spouse or common-law partner must have been a resident of Canada throughout the year and not confined to prison for 90+ days

Rural Supplement Eligibility

Residents of small and rural communities could qualify for an additional 20% supplement on top of their base CCR amount . This applied to residents living outside census metropolitan areas (CMAs) as defined by Statistics Canada .

Rural supplement eligibility: If you lived in a municipality that fell within a CMA, you were not eligible for the supplement. For example, Mississauga residents were ineligible because Mississauga is part of the Toronto CMA .

Ineligible CMAs by Province

  • Alberta: Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge
  • Ontario: Barrie, Belleville, Brantford, Greater Sudbury, Guelph, Hamilton, Kingston, Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo, London, Oshawa, Ottawa-Gatineau (Ontario part), Peterborough, St. Catharines-Niagara, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Windsor

Note: All eligible recipients in Prince Edward Island were eligible for the rural supplement .
