The ODSP Payment Calculator (also known as the ODSP Payment Estimator) helps individuals and families estimate their monthly financial assistance under the Ontario Disability Support Program. The total income support is comprised of a basic needs amount and a shelter allowance, plus additional benefits for special circumstances.
The basic needs amount assists with the cost of food, clothing, transportation, personal needs and other non-shelter-related items. In addition to basic needs, recipients may also receive:
To calculate your estimated ODSP payment, you'll need the following information:
The maximum amount provided for basic needs is determined by the number of persons in the benefit unit, the age of dependants, and geographic location. The table below shows the monthly basic needs amounts:
| Number of Dependants | Dependants 18+ | Dependants 0-17 | Recipient (No Spouse) | Recipient + Spouse (Standard) | Recipient + Spouse (Double Disabled) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0 | 0 | $809 | $1,166 | $1,613 |
| 1 | 0 | 1 | $809 | $1,166 | $1,613 |
| 1 | 1 | 0 | $1,255 | $1,394 | $1,841 |
| 2 | 0 | 2 | $809 | $1,166 | $1,613 |
| 2 | 1 | 1 | $1,255 | $1,394 | $1,841 |
| 2 | 2 | 0 | $1,484 | $1,648 | $2,095 |
Note: For each additional dependant beyond those listed, add $255 if the dependant is 18 years or older, and $0 if the dependant is 0-17 years old.
The shelter allowance helps with housing costs including rent, mortgage payments, property taxes, utilities, and condominium fees. The maximum shelter allowance varies by family size:
| Family Size | Maximum Monthly Shelter |
|---|---|
| 1 person | $599 |
| 2 persons | $941 |
| 3 persons | $1,018 |
| 4 persons | $1,106 |
| 5 persons | $1,196 |
| 6+ persons | $1,319 |
Formula: Shelter = Minimum (Actual Housing Cost, Maximum Allowed for Family Size)
The double disabled rate applies when both the recipient and spouse meet one of the disability criteria (both are persons with disabilities, both receive CPP-D, etc.). The maximum rate is $2,370 per month for the couple's portion of budgetary requirements.
Additional $88: An extra $88 per month may be added to the shelter allowance for double disabled cases where actual shelter costs are below the maximum for two people.
Example 1: Couple with disabilities, actual shelter $400
Example 2: Couple with disabilities, actual shelter $700
Example with dependants: Couple with disabilities + 1 child (0-17)
For each benefit unit with no spouse included and all dependants under 18 years of age, an additional $143 per month is provided.
Where the recipient lives north of the 50th parallel and is without year-round road access, an additional amount is provided:
| Number of Dependants | Recipient | Recipient and Spouse |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | $272 | $431 |
| 1 | $430 | $530 |
| 2 | $526 | $628 |
| For each additional dependant, add $102 | ||
Situation: Single person with no dependants, paying $600/month rent
Situation: Couple with disabilities, paying $800/month rent
Situation: Single parent, 2 children under 17, paying $900/month rent
If an applicant/recipient is living with a defaulting sponsor and the sponsorship agreement is still in effect, shelter costs can only be paid in specific circumstances:
Income support calculation example: A single recipient living with sponsor, not eligible for shelter costs, receiving no funds from sponsor:
Income support should be recalculated when a member of the benefit unit:
Where an applicant shares custody of a child on an approximately equal basis, they may receive income support for the child only if they are eligible to receive the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) for that child. In shared custody situations:
Adults over 18 living at home and determined to be financially dependent are considered members of the benefit unit. Dependent adults are subject to Ontario Works participation requirements. Failure to comply may result in a reduction to income support.
