The Manitoba EIA Eligibility Checker helps individuals and families understand whether they may qualify for financial assistance through the Employment and Income Assistance Program. EIA provides financial help to Manitobans who have no other way to support themselves or their families, including benefits from the Rent Assist Program that helps with housing costs.
Important changes to earned income exemptions and gift exemptions affect eligibility calculations. See below for details.
To qualify for EIA, you must meet these fundamental criteria:
The Manitoba EIA Eligibility Checker considers which category applies to your situation, as each has unique requirements.
Who qualifies:

Who qualifies:

To be eligible for EIA, you must demonstrate financial need. This means the total cost of your monthly basic needs and housing costs must be more than your total financial resources (income and assets).
Basic needs are based on:
Rent Assist helps with shelter and utility costs based on:
When using the Manitoba EIA Eligibility Checker, you must consider all income sources:

| Child/spousal support | Court-ordered payments | Counted as income |

| Insurance benefits | EI, Workers Compensation | Counted as income |

Your assets must be within certain limits to qualify for EIA. The Manitoba EIA Eligibility Checker considers these asset exemptions:

Starting August 1, 2025, EIA recipients can earn more before benefits are impacted:
Example: A person earns $600 at their job in August. The first $500 does not impact benefits. Of the other $100, the first $30 does not impact benefits (30% exemption), and the remaining $70 is deducted from EIA benefits.
Starting August 1, 2025, new gift exemption rules apply:
Gifts above these limits may affect your EIA eligibility or benefit amount.
People who are married or live as common-law couples must apply for EIA together. Both partners' income and assets are combined to determine eligibility.
If you have an outstanding warrant for certain serious offences (see Schedule C of The Assistance Regulation), your EIA application may be affected.
If you recently quit, were fired, or refused a job without good reason or just cause, your EIA application may be affected. You may need to explain your circumstances.
Residents of remote or northern regions of Manitoba may receive additional benefits to cover extra costs of living. This affects eligibility calculations for those areas.
